Our Story

In the fall of 2009, Pastors James and Janet Yarbrough attended a service at his Uncle’s church. After praying over the couple, the uncle said to James, "You’re going to have a dream that will change your life."

In the spring of 2010, James dreamed about a veteran’s memorial on an empty lot on East Center Street in Anderson. He woke up, went back to sleep, and dreamed in more detail. This happened three times, with each dream providing more clarity.

The next morning he shared the dreams with Janet. She encouraged him to draw what he had seen. He sketched the memorial and they then met with city officials to discuss construction. Approval was given and the city architect was asked to draw plans. A few weeks later, James and Janet were called to the city office to see the plans. They reflected every detail exactly as James had dreamed.

Fundraising began immediately and the Yarbroughs’ donated their savings to the cause. Local businesses also gave and donation boxes were placed throughout the city. Site work began and Anderson’s Veteran’s Walk of Honor opened and was dedicated on December 18, 2011, James' 64th birthday.

In the years since, there have been additions to the memorial, and hundreds of name plaques now hang in honor of U.S. veterans, both living and deceased, who have loved and served this great country.
